About

There’s a lot of really bad Christian takes out there.

Maybe you grew up in the church, maybe you tagged along to youth group with a well-meaning friend. Sure, you had some deep moments, or so it felt at the time. But now you’re a little older (although you’d never admit it), a bit wiser, and looking for something with a little more substance. You know…more than extreme emotion coerced by overly produced worship music.

Because when you see “Christian Wife” or “Jesus Lover” or “Saved by Him 🙏” in a bio, you get a little queasy. You’ve been burned too many times. You know, pervy youth pastors, mega-church wannabe ministers, and “prayer circles” that are thinly-veiled, cliquey gossip parties to last a lifetime.

But you know there’s something sacred there. You just haven’t seen something real on a consistent enough basis.

You’re dubious.

Dubious about the intentions of people who claim to love Jesus and then treat church like their personal country club.

Dubious about institutions that fail to be the hands and feet of god they claim to be representing.

And, dubious about your place in all of this. Whether it matters or how it matters, but you’re not ready to write it all off yet.

What You Can Expect at Faith For the Dubious

At Faith for the Dubious, you’ll find prayers that actually speak to the struggles happening. (As opposed to the toxic gratitude and overly-optimistic white-washing usually found in this type of content. You’ll find scriptures for particular occasions that include a little context, because “lawd knows” that the Bible has been cherry-picked to death with no regard for context.

You’ll also find the occasional, less-scripted musings and resources. Ones that don’t make you feel like you just pulled out your grandmama’s old, floral-emblazoned devotionals from the 1908’s. (No shade to them, they’re just a particular kind of reading).

This blog is here because I, too, am a little dubious. Sometimes a lot dubious. And I know a lot of people like myself long for the familiar comfort of turning to scripture passages that have endured the ages, but have a sour tinge due to how they’ve been (mis)used against us.

Each post is here because, not only do I feel that they’re needed and necessary resources, but because they’ve been considered for accuracy and context (exegeted, for my academics) to the best of my layperson’s ability. You will, occasionally, find that particular posts also tap into pastors for their unique perspective and words. (Because I know some pretty educated and insightful folks).

If you’re ready to tap back into your faith, but find yourself a little dubious, you’re in the right place. Let’s get started.
